A Place To Call Home

A Place To Call Home

There are disturbing statistics, many people know someone impacted and no end of media coverage. This is the state of the Australian housing supply shortage which has led to record levels of homelessness and rent stress across the country. The causes are many and varied but common across cities, regional and rural areas alike. The government at all levels has been swamped by the sheer volume of the issue as are charities and support groups involved with the sector.

Cassinia Community, after researching the problem to determine where and how we can make a meaningful difference has commenced work focusing on the Bendigo region. We are in the process of facilitating a series of public discussions to form a diverse group of citizens to identify and empower a variety of options to increase the availability of affordable housing stock.

The list of suggestions include:

  • Opening council land for development.
  • Identifying suitable blocks for multiple dwellings.
  • Utilizing tiny homes and prefabricated products.
  • Dividing houses into multiple family dwellings.
  • Backyard builds.
  • Regulation changes to allow quicker development.

If you are interested in joining the discussion group, provide advice or suggestions please send us a note to housing@cassinia.com
