Project Manager – The Island

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated and hands-on Project Manager to coordinate the planning and delivery of an exciting restoration and protection project on a rural property known as “The Island”, located near Ballan, Victoria. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day land management activities, supervising contractors, and ensuring project milestones are met efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project Coordination & Delivery:
    • Lead the planning and execution of restoration and protection activities on the property.
    • Ensure all works are delivered in alignment with project objectives and timelines.
    • Coordinate the development of a Restoration Management Plan to guide long-term restoration efforts.
  • Contractor & Work Supervision:
    • Manage and oversee contractors conducting land restoration, fencing, weed control, and revegetation activities.
    • Ensure all works are completed to a high standard, meeting compliance and safety regulations.
  • Natural Resource & Land Management:
    • Implement and oversee pest plant and animal control programs.
    • Prepare areas for revegetation and coordinate tree and shrub planting efforts.
    • Maintain and monitor the effectiveness of restoration activities, ensuring long-term sustainability.
    • Manage firebreaks, erosion control, and other land management practices.
  • Site Maintenance & Operations:
    • Conduct routine property maintenance, including fencing, track upkeep, and infrastructure repairs.
    • Ensure the property remains safe and functional for all workers and visitors.
  • Reporting & Compliance:
    • Maintain records of land management activities and contractor works.
    • Provide regular progress updates to the Conservation Operations Manager.
    • Ensure all works adhere to environmental regulations and best practices.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience in property management, land restoration, or conservation projects.
  • Ability to manage a project budget.
  • Strong understanding of natural resource management techniques, including pest control and revegetation.
  • Hands-on experience with land management activities such as tree planting, fencing, weed control, and erosion management.
  • Ability to manage and supervise contractors and on-ground teams effectively.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience using farm or land management equipment (chainsaws, sprayers, etc.) is desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a remote and rural setting.
  • Physically fit and capable of undertaking manual outdoor work in various conditions.
  • A commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable land management.

Additional Requirements

  • Current driver’s licence (manual preferred and 4WD competency).
  • Experience with GIS mapping or property planning tools is an advantage.
  • Chemical users’ certificate (or willingness to obtain).
  • First aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
